Undergraduate Certificate Programs
You are eligible to apply for federal financial aid if you are enrolled in the Ophthalmic Medical Personnel Training Certificate Program (OMPTP), Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medical Certificate Program, Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Computer Science, Graduate Certificate in Cybersecurity Risk Management, Graduate Certificate in Clincial and Translational Research, Graduate Certificate in Epidemiology, or the Graduate Certificate in Biostatistics. In order to determine your eligibility, you must complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Georgetown University’s school code is 001445. You should complete the FAFSA at the same time you are applying for admission.
Once you are admitted to the certificate program and you have completed and submitted the FAFSA, you will receive an email with information about your financial aid award. Students who are eligible for federal financial aid are awarded federal loans in amounts ranging from $5,500 to $12,500, depending on the information you provide on the FAFSA. If you are enrolled in Ophthalmic Medical Personnel Training Certificate Program, you may be eligible for the Federal Pell Grant. The information on the FAFSA will determine your eligibility.
Private education loans may be an option if you need additional help with financing your certificate program.
Next Steps After Receiving Your Financial Aid Award
Step 1: Review Your Award in GU Experience
Your financial aid award will be available for review in GU Experience under the “Financial Services” tab, where you can accept, reduce, or decline components of your financial aid award. Financial aid that stays in an “offered” status will not appear on your billing statement.
Step 2: Report Your Outside Scholarships
Outside scholarships and resources include private scholarships, non-Georgetown tuition benefits, and veteran benefits. Under federal law and university policy, we must consider these resources and may be required to revise your financial aid award. Your outside scholarships will be used to reduce or eliminate first your family financial responsibility, if applicable, then your student loans or federal work study before any adjustment is made to your Georgetown scholarship.
You must report all outside scholarships through GU Experience by going to “Award Information,” then to “Resources/Additional Information.” You can view this step-by-step guide for more details. Our office also provides information to assist you in searching for outside scholarships.
If you wish to request verification of need, enrollment, or cost of attendance, you can write to the attention of the assistant director for External Scholarship Programs in the OSFS or fax to the assistant director’s attention at (202) 687-6542.
If your scholarship is being sent to Georgetown, please note this in the comments section in GU Experience and use this address:
Office of Student Financial Services
White Gravenor Building, Lower Level
Georgetown University
37th & O Streets NW, Box 571252
Washington, D.C. 20057
If you need an official invoice from the university for your outside award to be disbursed, you must send a written request to the Office of Billing and Payment Services. The office will then bill your sponsor.
Step 3: Complete Your Student Loan Requirements
If you have accepted your Federal Direct Loans in GU Experience and are a first-time borrower at Georgetown, you will need to complete the following loan requirements:
1. Entrance Counseling
2. Loan Agreement for a Subsidized/Unsubsidized Loan (MPN)
Subsidized Federal Direct Loan | Unsubsidized Federal Direct Loan | |
---|---|---|
Interest Rate | 5.05% | 5.05% |
Origination Fee | 1.062% | 1.062% |
Grace Period | 6 month | 6 month |
Does Accrue While Enrolled? | No | Yes |
Step 4: Review Your Bill
You can view your bill by clicking “Student Account Services” after logging into GU Experience. If you have any questions about paying your bill, setting up a payment plan, or accessing your refund, contact the Office of Billing and Payment Services.
You will receive a billing statement through your Georgetown email for the fall semester in early July, mid-December for the spring semester, and on a rolling basis starting in March for the summer term. If you have a pending source of financial aid (such as a loan or outside scholarship), those aid amounts will appear on your billing statement as estimated “memo credits” until actual funds are received. Memo credits reduce the amount that you would otherwise have to pay to Georgetown.
