Athletic Scholarships




Georgetown University athletic scholarships are awarded by the Department of Athletics on the basis of athletic and academic potential. Many are awarded based on demonstrated financial need for scholarship assistance, and participation in a particular intercollegiate sport. The Alfond Family Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was donated in May of 1990 by Harry Alfond of Dexter, Maine. Mr. Alfond, the founder of Dexter Shoe Company, is affiliated with the University through his two grandsons who are alumni. The scholarship is awarded to one or more full-time undergraduates playing intercollegiate men's lacrosse for Georgetown, with preference to a student-athlete from New England.

The Richard F. Barry Memorial Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was donated by Richard K. Barry, C'59, of San Francisco, in memory of his father. The scholarship is awarded to one or more recruited undergraduate students participating in the intercollegiate Golf program at Georgetown.

The Edwin Beachler Track Scholarship
The Beachler Scholarship was donated by former runner Edwin Beachler, C'62, of Pittsburgh, PA. A member of the Hoyas Unlimited and the Spiked Shoe Club, Ed has helped support track throughout the years. The scholarship is awarded to one or more recruited undergraduate students participating in the intercollegiate Track program at Georgetown.

The Black Student Crew Scholarship
An anonymous donor established this scholarship to assist one or more black students who participate in intercollegiate rowing and who demonstrate financial need.

The Father Bunn Football Scholarship
The Gridiron Club established this scholarship in memory of Fr. Bunn, S.J., a long-time supporter of Hoya Football and moderator of athletics.  The scholarship assists football student-athletes who have demonstrated financial need. 

The Cassin Family Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established through the generosity of men's lacrosse parent and alumnus Joseph Cassin, C'64, of New York. The scholarship is awarded to a recruited student who participates on the intercollegiate men's lacrosse team and is enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences.

The Thomas E. Curtis, Jr. Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was donated by Tom and Marge Curtis of Hingham, MA, parents of the late Tom Jr., B'68, in their son's name. Tom Jr. was an experienced sailor at Georgetown and remained in sailing as a boat broker after graduation until an unfortunate sail racing accident took his life in 1979. The scholarship is awarded to one or more undergraduate student(s) enrolled in a baccalaureate degree program who have demonstrated strong interest and involvement in Sailing. For such time as the granting of this scholarship is disallowed by the rules of the Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association, it is the donor's intent that this scholarship be granted to one or more undergraduate students who participate in Intercollegiate Athletics, preferably women's lacrosse. It is the donor's expressed interest to give preference for the scholarships to students who live in the geographic area of New England.

The Robert E. Daniels Athletic Scholarship
The scholarship is awarded to one or more undergraduate students participating in the Intercollegiate Athletics program at Georgetown, on the basis of demonstrated financial need.

The Donald Donahue Minor Sports Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was given by Donald Donahue, C'49, of New York as part of the Bicentennial Campaign in the late 1980s. These scholarships are awarded to one or more undergraduate students participating in Intercollegiate Athletics at Georgetown.

Joseph Eacobacci Football Scholarship
On September 11, 2001, Georgetown lost Joseph Eacobacci, C’96, in the World Trade Center Tragedy. Joe was captain of the football team during his undergraduate years. Memorial gifts created a permanent endowment to support a need-based football scholarship in his name. The scholarship is awarded to one or more students who play on the intercollegiate football team. The student(s) must exhibit financial need to receive the award, which is used to replace the work-study and/or loan portion of the recipient’s Georgetown financial aid package.

The Denise M. Furey Track and Field Scholarship
This scholarship provides financial aid for one or more track athlete(s) enrolled in the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown. The Director of Athletics selects scholarship recipients in consultation with the GU Office of Financial Services, in accordance with their policies and procedures for awarding Georgetown athletic scholarship grants.

Thomas E. Galvin, B’90 Golf Scholarship
On September 11, 2001, Georgetown lost Thomas E. Galvin, B’90, in the World Trade Center Tragedy. Tom was captain of the golf team and later became president of the 19th Hole Club, the golf alumni support club of Hoyas Unlimited. He also served as a volunteer in locating jobs for young graduates through the Alumni Career Network. Memorial gifts created a permanent endowment to support a need-based scholarship in his name. The scholarship is awarded to one or more students who play on the intercollegiate golf team. The student(s) must exhibit financial need to receive the award, which is used to replace the work-study and/or loan portion of the recipient’s Georgetown financial aid package. If a needy golf student-athlete cannot be found in a given year, the scholarship is awarded to a needy student who has worked as a caddie.

The Joseph T. Gardner Athletic Scholarship
In the fall of 1985, Mr. and Mrs. Michael R. Gardner established this scholarship in memory of Mr. Joseph T. Gardner, CAS'30. The scholarship is awarded each year to a Junior in Georgetown College. The basis for choice is the student's academic achievement, a need for financial assistance to continue studies in the college, and participation and leadership in athletics at Georgetown. The scholarship will be awarded for the student's junior and senior years.

The General Athletic Scholarship
These scholarships are awarded to one or more undergraduate students participating in Intercollegiate Athletics at Georgetown.

The Gordon Family Track Scholarship
The scholarship was donated by the Gordon Family of California. The scholarship is awarded to one or more student-athletes who participate in Women's Track and Field and have demonstrated financial need.

The Graham Family Athletic Scholarship
The Graham Family Scholarship was established through the generosity of former golf captain, Thomas M. Graham, C'63, of Connecticut. This scholarship is awarded to one or more students who participate on the Intercollegiate Golf team and is enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences.

The John E. Kenny, Sr. Golf Scholarship
This scholarship was donated by Gerry Kenny, B'71, of Chicago in honor of his father. The scholarship is awarded to one or more recruited undergraduate students participating in the Intercollegiate Golf program at Georgetown who is enrolled in the School of Business.

J. Kevin Kenny Family Women’s Golf Scholarship
J. Kevin Kenny, C'58, has created the first-ever endowed women’s golf scholarship at Georgetown in the name of his family. This endowment permanently supports one or more student athletes in women’s golf.

The C.E. Laborde, Jr. Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established through the generosity of three of the sons of C.E. Laborde, Jr.; Ted Laborde, Cliffe Laborde, and Kevin Laborde of New Orleans, LA. All three are Georgetown graduates and long-time friends and supporters of the University and Athletics. This scholarship is awarded to a student whose participation in an intercollegiate athletics program will significantly benefit that sport.

Edward W. Machir Family Athletic Scholarship
The Edward W. Machir Family Scholarship Fund supports need-based grants to students who participate in intercollegiate athletics and are concurrently enrolled in the McDonough School of Business. The Athletic Director, in cooperation with the GU Office of Student Financial Services, awards the scholarship to one or more student-athletes meeting the stated criteria.

The Edward and Rita McCarthy & Joseph and Margaret Lang Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established through the generosity of an anonymous donor. The scholarship is awarded to a student who participates in intercollegiate athletics at Georgetown and comes from a family of six or more children.

The Dr. Charles P. Melone, Sr. Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established through the generosity of Georgetown Regent and Athletic Donor, Charles P. Melone, Jr., C'64, M'69, of New York in honor of his father. This scholarship is awarded to a student who participates in intercollegiate athletics at Georgetown, is enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences, and preferably has an interest in pre-med.

The Moran Family 3rd Century Crew Scholarship
This scholarship was created by Ned, B'67, and Judy Moran, N'68, in honor of the entire Moran family. Ned was a former rower and long-time donor to crew. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of both academic merit and athletic ability. The recipient(s), in addition to exhibiting academic competence must also demonstrate outstanding athletic ability as determined by the coaching staff of the intercollegiate crew program in which the student(s) participate(s).

The Mary P. Mullen Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established by University Regent Jack Donahue, B'58, in memory of his late aunt who was a teacher for many years and whose influence on him spurred him to commemorate her legacy. Income from this scholarship permanently supports one or more student athletes each year, with this support continuing, consistent with NCAA rules, throughout the student's participation in one of the following intercollegiate athletics programs (Baseball, Men's Crew, Women's Crew, Field Hockey, Women's Lacrosse, Men's Soccer, Women's Soccer, Men's Swimming, Women's Swimming, Men's Tennis, Women's Tennis, or Women's Track). Preference is given to student-athletes one of whose parents or guardians is in the field of education. In addition, the student is required to have financial aid need and strong academic credentials.

The Robert B. Nolan, C'38, Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established through the generosity of Georgetown Alumnus and Athletic Donor, Robert Nolan, Jr., B'74, in honor of his father. The scholarship is awarded to a student athlete who plays two sports with one of those sports being football. The scholarship is awarded to a student who has financial need. Under the present MAAC Football Conference rules, the scholarship must be awarded to a student-athlete as a scholarship for participation in the sport other than football. However, at any time in the future that the University is permitted to award football-related scholarships, the scholarship will be awarded to a student athlete for participation in football only.

The Carolyn and Roger O'Neill Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was donated by Carolyn and Roger O'Neill, C'59, of New Jersey. A member of the Athletics Committee of the University Board of Regents, Roger has helped support men's and women's lacrosse. The scholarship is awarded to one or more recruited undergraduate students participating in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse program at Georgetown.

The Anthony, Kristin and Reagan Raneri Women's Lacrosse Scholarship
This scholarship was donated by Anthony (M'71), Kristin (C'02) and Reagan (C'01). Reagan is a former Thomas E. Curtis, Jr. Memorial Athletic Scholarship recipient. The scholarship is awarded to one or more women's lacrosse players, preferably for those who play defense positions.

The Joan T. Rienzo Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship is a gift of the Rienzo Family in honor of the late Joan T. Rienzo, the late wife of Senior Director of Athletics Francis X. Rienzo and mother of Georgetown grads, Francis, '89, Matthew, '98, Cecilia, '93, and Teresa, '90. Scholarships are awarded to socio-economically disadvantaged minority student-athletes from inner cities of the United States who participate in Intercollegiate Athletics (excluding Men's and Women's Basketball, Men's and Women's Track and Field and Football) and are enrolled in Georgetown College or Georgetown School of Nursing.

The Ed and Irene Shaw Athletic Scholarship
This fund was donated by women's soccer parents L. Edward (C'66) and Irene Shaw of Mamaroneck, NY in October of 1997. Their three daughters all played for Georgetown in the early 1990s. Ed and Irene have both served on the Athletics Committee of the University Board of Regents. The fund provides scholarships for one or more recruited undergraduate students participating in the Intercollegiate Women's Soccer program at Georgetown or supports an assistant coach.

Joseph P. Shea Athletic Scholarship
On September 11, 2001, Georgetown lost Joseph P. Shea, B’76, in the World Trade Center Tragedy. Memorial gifts created a permanent endowment to support a need-based scholarship in his name. The scholarship is awarded to a student whose family was affected by the World Trade Center tragedy. The student must exhibit financial need to receive the award, which is used to replace the work-study and/or loan portion of the recipient’s Georgetown financial aid package.

The Winsor and Mary Jane Simmons Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established through the generosity of three brothers, all of whom attended Georgetown, and their spouses: Brian (B'81) and Tracie Simmons; Bruce (B'69) and Ellen Simmons; and Bradley (B'74) and Elizabeth Simmons. The gift is in honor of the Simmons brothers' parents. The scholarship is awarded to one or more students who play on the intercollegiate football team, are enrolled in the McDonough School of Business and have demonstrated financial need.

The Kimberly Simons Women's Lacrosse Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was donated in August 2004 by Melanie Taylor of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, a parent of a women's lacrosse player, in honor of now retired long-time head women's lacrosse coach Kimberly Simons.  The scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate women's lacrosse player who exemplifies excellence in academics and demonstrates outstanding leadership skills. 

The Peter L. Smith Family Football Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Peter L. Smith in honor of his family. The scholarship supports football student-athletes who demonstrate financial need.

The Spiked Shoe Club Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was created in 1997-98 by the track alumni who voted to use $150,000 that they raised to establish a scholarship fund for the track program. The scholarship is awarded to one or more recruited undergraduate students participating in the Intercollegiate Men's or Women's Track program at Georgetown.

The Mark "Buddy" Stuart Golf Scholarship
This scholarship was donated by Mark J. "Buddy" Stuart, B'60, of New York. The scholarship is awarded to one or more recruited undergraduate students participating in the Intercollegiate Golf program at Georgetown.

The Patrick Sullivan Track Scholarship
Patrick Sullivan, B’91, was a former Hoya track team member who was lost in the World Trade Center Tragedy. The Patrick Sullivan, B’91, Memorial Scholarship Endowment provides financial aid to a member of the track team, specifically for a team member who comes from a family involved in public service (i.e. firefighter or police or EMT). The scholarship is awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need.

The Vespoli Family Crew Scholarship
Michael (B'68) and Nancy Vespoli of Connecticut established this rowing scholarship in 2003.  The scholarship provides financial aid to one or more intercollegiate rowers who demonstrate financial need.  Mike Vespoli was a world-class rower and 1972 Olympian. 

The Donal M. Walsh, Sr. Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established through the generosity of Brian and Maura Devaney of the Class of 1976. The New York natives endowed the scholarship in the name of Maura's father. Both are Georgetown graduates and long-time friends and supporters of the University and Athletics. This scholarship is awarded to a student whose participation in an intercollegiate athletics program will significantly benefit that sport.

The John and Marybeth Wooters Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was donated by former swimmer John, C'75, and Marybeth Wooters, N'75, of Moorestown, New Jersey. A member of the Athletics Committee of the University Board of Regents, John has helped support swimming throughout the years. John has helped athletics as a staff member, coach and volunteer. He was the swim coach in the mid 70s and president of Hoyas Unlimited in the early 90s. He also has served on the Board of Governors of the Alumni Association and the Admissions Committee. The scholarship is awarded to one or more recruited undergraduate students participating in the Intercollegiate Swimming program at Georgetown.
